みのうえ【身の上】

1 〔現在の状況〕 one's lot [condition, circumstances]; (安否) welfare; 〔これまでの境遇〕 one's early years [life]; one's background [history].

●気の毒な身の上 sad [pitiful] circumstances; a sad lot.

●今の身の上では結婚できません. In my present condition [Circumstanced as I am], I cannot afford to marry.

●身の上を語る tell the story of one's life; tell one's tale; tell all about oneself

・身の上を案じる feel concerned about sb's welfare [safety]; wonder [be anxious to know] how sb is doing [faring].

●今は安楽な身の上だ. He is now in easy circumstances.

2 〔運命〕 one's fortune; one's future.

●身の上を占う tell sb's fortune; forecast the future of sb's life
